Silky Gem Makes Candy That Looks Like Jewelry. What’s It Made Of?

Silky Gem makes the kind of candy you might photograph before deciding which piece to eat. The colorful, translucent shapes resemble little gemstones. Then comes the detail that makes them especially interesting: a crisp outer shell surrounding a firm jelly center.

Silky Gem is handcrafted crystal candy inspired by Vietnamese mứt rau câu and Japanese kohakutou. The company says its gems are cut by hand and dried over several days, giving each piece small differences in shape and color. The Silky Gem story.

We haven’t tried them ourselves yet. But candy with two distinct textures and the appearance of something from a miniature treasure chest has our attention.

What gives crystal candy its crunch?

Silky Gem describes the foundation of its kohakutou-style candy as sugar, water, and agar-agar. Agar provides the jelly structure, while drying creates the contrasting exterior. The result is designed to deliver that initial crack followed by a softer center. How Silky Gem describes its crystal candy.

That contrast is the discovery here. If your favorite part of a sweet is how it breaks, crunches, or gives way when you bite, this offers something different to explore.

The Treasure Box packages the idea into 16 handcrafted candies with assorted colors, cuts, and flavors. It feels suited to putting on a small plate after dinner and letting everyone choose the piece that catches their eye. Explore the Treasure Box.

A family tradition behind the sparkle

Founder Gia Huynh says she grew up sharing mứt rau câu with family and guests during Lunar New Year in Vietnam. Later, she began making crystal candy in the United States, drawing on those memories and the artistry of Japanese kohakutou. Gia’s story.

That background gives the presentation more meaning. The bright colors and intricate shapes build on a tradition of sharing sweets, making the box especially appealing as a host gift or something to open with friends over tea.

What to know before ordering

Ingredients vary by flavor and collection, so don’t assume every Silky Gem product has the same dietary profile. The company discloses that its facility processes pistachios and that certain collections contain dairy. We couldn’t verify a complete, current ingredient and nutrition panel for every piece in the Treasure Box. Check the specific labels before ordering if dietary restrictions matter to you. Ingredient and allergy information.

Keep the candies dry and away from humidity to protect their texture. Silky Gem also advises against giving them to children under six because the pieces can have sharp edges.

For us, the occasion practically writes itself: tea, a few friends, and a plate of edible gems. Choosing the prettiest one might take longer than eating it.
